we have seen pope benedict sort of ad lib his final day. he wasn't supposed to make a speech to the cardinals today, and he decided to make that speech. anybody who is wondering how catholic church would deal with a pope and a pope ameritus, he made it very clear that he is going to step back, step away from power, he is going to live a life of prayer and meditation. that was the first thing. the second thing i was struck by was watching him at castle gondolpho and when he came out on to the balcony, and it's the first time i've ever seen him without a prepared text in front of him, and just spoke from his heart, and he said, you know, i'm no longer pope. i am now a pilgrim on the last stage of my journey. he has always been a very humble man, known as the man who was a reluctant pope. he wanted to retire when he worked for john paul ii, asked him, john 35u8 ii, would not let that happen. he became pope after john paul ii died, but he never seemed to enjoy it the way john paul ii did, who was an actor. benedict is a scholar, a theologian, a
